A CT calcium score measures the amount of calcium buildup in the coronary arteries of the heart. It is primarily used to assess the risk of coronary artery disease (CAD). During the test, a computed tomography (CT) scanner takes images of the heart, and a calcium score is calculated based on the presence and quantity of calcium deposits in the coronary arteries. This score helps healthcare professionals identify individuals at risk of CAD, aiding in preventive measures and treatment decisions. A higher calcium score typically indicates a higher risk of heart disease.
We ask that patients do not have any caffeine, tea, soft drinks, or stimulants 24 hrs before the scan and to not exercise prior to the appointment. This will allow the heartrate to be lower and result in improved image quality. No other preparation is required.
During the scan you will be asked to lie down and follow some simple breathing instructions from the scanner, 2 ECG dots will be placed above your clavicle and another 2 ECG dots placed below your ribs on each side. Connected to these dots will be 4 leads that will allow the CT scanner to take a picture of your health in between heart beats.
You do not require an appointment for your CT Calcium score. Simply follow the preparation and bring in your referral letter from the doctor.
A CT Calcium score is a quick scan and usually takes under 10 minutes from start to finish.
CT Calcium scores are not covered under Medicare and therefore there is an out-of-pocket fee of $180.00.
